It even has the animations, and a lot tiles for them, due to the background waterfalls. Unfortunatly, HPZ was never released in Sonic 2 (tho it got a little reference in Sonic & Knuckles), but screenshots of the beta were released, so I guess I have to resort to them from memoryвЂ¦ Every tile IвЂ™ve seen seen the screenshots seem to be there, even part of the background I didnвЂ™t know about (lower most part). Ok, enough of the story, let the rating begin. Anyway, of all zones cut, HPZ was the most complete, so the most likely one to be converted. Of all the Sonic games I know, Sonic 2 for the Genesis/Mega Drive had been changed the most radical since itвЂ™s beta stage: 3 zones were cut (Wood Zone, Hidden Palace Zone and Genocide City Zone), some others got name changes (Neo Green Hill Zone -> Aquatic Ruin Zone), while another was completely rebuilt (Casino Night Zone). One of the levels that was cut out of the Sonic 2 Beta. Hope you have as much fun using this set as I had puting it together.ДЄh, the Hidden Palace Zone. Macbeth (Star Fox 2) ITs are still in the zip, so you have a choice. I figured theyвЂ™re similar enough to constitute Act 1 and 2 mixes (ala Sonic 3 & Knuckles), and they sounded like they fit, so I used вЂem.ДЄDDED: I went and fixed up a (rather crappy) XM of the finalвЂ™s Hidden Palace Zone music so it sounds alot better. These tracks (the 2nd has been slowed to match the firstвЂ™s speed) are from planet Macbeth (1 is aboveground, 2 is underground). This beta was never released in a final form, and only a 98-99% complete prototype has surfaced (another ROM). The Music: Included are two SPC -> IT dumps from another beta game: Star Fox 2. Also added a minor secret using the new horizontal poles (Masking is intentional, as IвЂ™ve noticed sometimes you just canвЂ™t get the height needed). Some things just donвЂ™t translate well to JJ2). Only 2 types of enemies inhabit this stage: the ones as close to the Dinobot and Batbot (behavior-wise) as I could find.ДЄDDED: IвЂ™ve gone in and added some moving spikes (bugs are possible, though. Where the level is supposed to end in a recent hack, a warp has been placed instead, taking you back to the start. Going up the steep ramp near the end will lead you to a warp where the original level is supposed to wrap.

There is no actual end to the level either. Some minor tweaks have been made, mostly in making the вЂblocksвЂ™ fit better. This is not a COMPLETELY accurate translation, however. The level (made mostly as a tileset demo level) is a recreation of Sonic 2 BetaвЂ™s Hidden Palace Zone Act 1. Due to the sheer volume of tiles necessary even before animation, this is a TSF- ONLY tileset (1,170 before creating any animation).ДЄDDED: Horizontal and vertical poles, as well as animating вЂpole endвЂ™ tiles (in the colors of some of the background art). All known stage animation is in, and cycling palette art found in the game has been converted to animating tiles. This tileset can build all of the 128Г—128 вЂblocksвЂ™ Sonic 2 uses for its level structure. This ROM image has the most complete version of Hidden Palace known.

In early вЂ™99, a person by the name of Simon Wai found the prototype game as a ROM image on a Chinese website. Before 1999, all we could do was wonder what this level would have been like. However, when the final version of the game was released on November 24, 1992, this stage was conspicuously absent. This level was in magazine preview screenshots in the early parts of 1992 due to its completeness at the time the prerelease cartridge was given to the press. This is a tileset and level made with art from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (beta)вЂ™s Hidden Palace Zone.
